Gilles Mendel's show for J. Mendel is always a hot ticket at Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week. With his Spring/Summer 2013 collection, Gilles celebrated his 10th year designing ready-to-wear, for his families venerable 130 year old fur house.
Since fur and leather is such an integral part of the house of J. Mendel, it's surprising when one of his Spring/Summer collections is every bit as beautiful as a Fall/Winter show.
This stunning collection of perfectly cut, draped and water color pleated chiffon's and jacquard dresses, was inspired by photographs of the Kawachi Fuji garden in Japan. There were also florals, gloriously saturated color and crisp, architectural shapes. Naturally, touches of fur highlighted several exits.
Orlando Pita did soft hair, middle parted and tucked behind both ears. Revlon's Global Artistic Director, Gucci Westman, celebrated the model's girlish natural beauty with matte brown eyes and nude lips.
Westman stated, “I wanted to create a look that is universally beautiful, that any girl would want to wear.” says Westman. “Because the collection has so many bold and bright colors and patterns, I kept it pretty simple and fresh. I started with a muted brown shadow on the eyes, lined the inner rim, then added mascara to both the top and bottom lashes to make the eyes pop. A warm flush of peach on the cheeks and a simple glossy lip rounded out the look.”
For a classic meets modern look, celebrity manicurist, Jin Soon Choi chose a timeless nude color for the hands and paired it with something more unexpected and fun on the toes. Choi used bright red, purple and pink on the toes, depending on the model.
The Polyvore set I created above, was submitted for an "Emmy Contest" currently running. I am rooting wildly for Claire Danes to win an Emmy to match her Golden Globe award, for her portrayal of a brilliant bi-polar C.I.A. agent on my obsession, Showtime's Homeland.
The minute this extraordinary, cornflower blue, laser cut leather dress appeared, both me and my friend Q. imagined this on Claire. With her long neck, doe eyes and long torso, no one would do it more justice on the Red Carpet than Claire Danes.
Special thanks to my wonderful hosts, Peter Levy of IMG and his wife, my dear friend and colleague Linda. Here are some other looks from the J. Mendel Spring/Summer 2013 collection that inspired me with their "effortless" beauty:
