As I approach the 10 year anniversary of my Blog DivaDebra, I have so appreciated you,  my loyal readers.  I am nothing if not a, "Girl's Girl", and what started from emailing my gal pals and bringing my favorite products picks to book club, has grown into a 10 year labor of love, with readers from all over the world!

Over the years, I have many times been approached to sample vitamins that promised what we all want, a convenient little slice of our youth, albeit thicker hair, firmer skin, or increased energy.

The problem is, I never felt that there would be any way to show my readers a measurable difference, if one existed at all!  Hence, I always nicely declined all offers.  I have only ever been interested in sharing the best of my product experiences and at times, the things to steer clear of.

There are two areas on a woman's body that are the tell tales of age. Time and gravity just win out here...One is the neck, the other is our hands.

With great luck, my beauty blogging life as always worked in a funny way...whatever I really needed often found its way to me.

Literally, one day before I met Paul Vella, the Business Development Partner at Aethern, I had the mortifying epiphany of seeing, really seeing, my left hand.  How and when did that happen?

Despite all my efforts at beating the clock,  I felt as if an octogenarian's hand had somehow been swapped with my own.  The horror!  Do see below, lest you think I am exaggerating.

Paul and I met at the Lucas Magnum Salon in Greenwich, during a day devoted to beauty and wellness.  Three things impressed me immediately:

TotalBeauty  is a site I browse daily.  I like there editors and their articles. When they do a round-up, the stats are derived by tallying the product ratings, submitted by devoted readers. That's a win.

There was no way I was passing up what readers rated their 11 best anti-aging products.  Naturally, there were some pricey picks in the mix.  And naturally, I perused them all, hoping to find some beauty bargains.

I found three, two great serums and the Olay product above, that acts as both a moisturizer and primer and it came in at #2.  Yup. For $25.99, I will run out to buy it.

I knew I would be spending a few days at my sister Loren's NYC apartment and for once, I truly needed to pack light.  While I have mastered the art of packing a well coordinated travel wardrobe, the really heavy baggage is my makeup and cosmetics.

Back in November, I had the opportunity to attend an evening seminar with Lisa Topham RN, BSN at her satellite office in Greenwich, Ct. I sat rapt, with a room full of women, as Lisa filled us in on all the latest fillers, including what has become the star of her anti-aging arsenal, Bellafill the five year filler.  Lisa, is an aesthetic perfectionist, and having practiced nothing but the art of anti-aging with injectibles for the last 30 years.  Suffice to say, she has seen and done it all.  What we couldn't take our eyes off, was the screen of Before and After's that documented all she can achieve, non-invasively. There comes a time in every woman's life, when she starts noticing the visible signs of aging; fine lines, wrinkles, loss of collagen volume and sagging jawlines. Ever notice how great you look with a tight towel turban post shampoo? All of a sudden, everything is where it used to be! Nothing crazy, just a slight uptick, but it does seem to shave the years off.

Notice the improvement in overall youthful volume; the lifted cheekbones, jawline and upturned mouth. Gone are the deeper lines forming from her nose to her lips. Also attractive? The addition of a tasteful amount of lip filler, nothing cartoonish here, but a simple addition of the lost volume in her natural lip area.

Not only is the patient thrilled with her subtle, beautiful results, with no downtime, but her husband is also very pleased...who said men never notice anything? Granted, there is some bruising associated with injectibles, but short of vanity, unlike a surgical recovery, there is nothing to keep you from pursuing normal activities.

She then took pictures and posted them on her computer, so she could show me which areas of my face she thought needed attention and what exactly she could do to improve them. What bothered me most, was my jawline. Gravity, mother effer time, was weighing me down, and up until recently, nothing short of a scalpel could address it.  Lisa felt confident, that Bellafill would give me the correction I sought.  By adding volume to the outer portion of my cheekbone and lower face, she successfully lifted and tightened my jawline.  The after pictures were taken 3 weeks later and since Bellafill also stimulates natural collagen production, my results have only improved in the subsequent 2 months.

I am sharing them with you, because I truly believe a picture is worth a thousand words. I am not saying I would never go under the knife...who knows how I will feel in the future. Iit's possible, however,  to achieve lovely, natural looking results without anesthesia, discomfort, swelling and downtime, I'm down.

We are a generation of fit, fabulous women. If taking advantage of modern anti-aging techniques helps make your biological age better align with the age you feel, so be it.  If you choose to age naturally and live a healthy lifestyle, so be it, as well.

I've noticed a trend on the last few Girl's trips I've been on...Everyone arrives with a full on tan. While I arrive milky as a baby's bottom, they are kissed by the sun before we have hit the first lounge chair.   So what's the story?

The missing link here was that my friends were pre-gaming; a day or two before departure, they were going in for full body air brush tans. Rational? You arrive looking rested, and end up taking in less damaging sun, since the pressure is off to get some color. Of course having a faux glow does not preclude wearing appropriate sun screen, but any additional color is like a cherry on a sundae.

My friend Janice always arrives with a gorgeous caramel glow. I knew she would be the perfect person to ask. "I'm going to Glow in Rye Brook. Come with me!"

Ready for Prime Time

As I scraped to the bottom of my 4th HourGlass Mineral Veil Travel Primer, I realized, I might have to rethink this strategy.  I love the HourGlass Primer, I do, but I have yet to make the leap to the $52 full size bottle.  Instead, I dribble along at $18 a pop.

This week TotalBeauty did a roundup on the 10 Best Drugstore Primers. I like TB's roundup's, because they are based on the the aggregates of scores provided by readers who provide feedback.  I rarely take the time to write reviews on websites like Sephora, MakeupAlley or TotalBeauty, but I'm ever grateful for those who do.

Nothing really struck my fancy from the drugstore lot, so I dug a little further and found a another TotalBeauty roundup that was not predicated on my price, the 11 Best Primers. I was fascinated to see that Maybelline's Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser, for $6.99 was better rated than my beloved HourGlass Mineral Veil, despite being 7x less expensive.

Ummmph.

Nearly 8 years in, I have the stats to prove that my best read posts are ones that feature recognizable brands.  Still, I can't help wondering on occasion if I'm passing up the opportunity to sample something really special, that I can share with you.  Does it really matter if it's not available in a place fashioned from brick and mortar?  How much are we all buying via the Internet anyway?

Plenty.

Thus, Osmosis Curling Mascara peaked my interest and I agreed to try it...and what a lovely product it is! Firstly, it really does curl...I know this because I used it without an eyelash curler. So nice when I product actually do what it purports to. Secondly, it creates the cleanest flush of clump free lashes I've ever seen.  My first thought? Doll lashes! And that was with just the first coat!

I was excited that they said yes although a bit nervous...what was I getting myself into?

Dr. Schwartz office is located on the Upper East Side in a gorgeous townhouse. His staff, Megan who coordinates patient services and nurse Barbara couldn't have been kinder or more accommodating.

 surgical facility(for half a second I wanted to bolt!  Was I having brain surgery or a laser treatment?!)  More impressive then some hospitals I've seen.

I met with Dr. Schwartz first, who took the time to review my medical history and then explained everything about my treatment, and exactly what to expect during and after.  He answered all my questions and showed me pictures of patients during the healing process. He was warm, professional and caring and I immediately felt relieved that I would be in his skilled hands. 

We agreed to go for a medium to deep peel, in more heavily pigmented areas. Why go through this if not to get the best possible result? Women do choose light peels, however, when they need to be Red Carpet ready in a day or two.

Barbara then took 3-D pictures so Dr. Schwartz would be able adjust the Halo handpiece to treat areas of my face that needed deeper penetration than others. Next she cleansed my face thoroughly and applied an excellent numbing cream.  After a half an hour, I wasn't even sure my head was still attached to my shoulders!  Dr. Schwartz and I had discussed pain management. Local ladies often opt for a Valium/Percoset cocktail. Since I drove into town, we agreed on Advil/Tylenol instead, which I would have preferred either way. 

The treatment itself took about 25 minutes. As discussed, it felt warm and at times prickly. I think my tolerance for pain is fairly high.  On a 1-10 scale, I would put it at a 2/3. What was more uncomfortable, and what I had been prepped for, was the 45 minutes or so after the peel. At the point, it feels like the worst sunburn you've ever had.  Barbara and Megan took turns applying strips of gauze, dipped in cold water to my skin. They also had a tube they blew cool fresh air on my skin.  Both helped to reduce the sting considerably.  

When I left, since my eyes had been protected by goggles, I pretended I either looked like I had spent a week skiing in Gstaad or fell asleep on a beach in St. Barts. Either way, it wasn't pretty, but by the time I reached my sisters apartment, (the only time in my life I ever enjoyed walking in NYC on a freezing day,) it had subsided completely. Sis noticed nothing, other than I wasn't wearing any makeup, notable in and of itself!

Later than night I was a bit pink and swollen. I took some advil and went to bed.  Check back tomorrow for Part 2, of my Halo Laser treatment with Dr. Mark Schwartz, pics included.

It will be worth it...and for me, it surely  was.

I have long been a serum fan. Longer than they have been popular and when they were harder to find. Nowadays, they are easy pickings, but really, not. How do you choose and how much are you willing to spend.

Despite all I have purchased and all that has sent to me to sample, I had hit the wall.  Nothing felt right. Envy SilkPeel; Microdermabrasion Plus so much more

When Melissa asked, if I would be interested in having an Envy Medical Silkpeel,  an advanced micro dermabrasion with  "dermalinfusion" at Dr. Bryan Forley's NYC townhouse, I leaped  at the opportunity.

Dr. Forley's office is located in one of the prettiest parts of the city, just a few steps away from one of my favorite places,the Metropolitan Museum of art.  This lovely townhouse not only hosts his soothing office, but a surgical suite, where many patient procedures are comfortably performed, in the presence of a board certified Anesthesiologist.

He explained to me what a SilkPeel does and how it differs from traditional micro dermabrasion (which simply polishes the skin by blasting it with aluminum crystals) and listened to my skincare concerns. We decided to do go for the anti-aging option, which would topically, but deeply infuse my skin with Hyaluronic acid.

I was treated with gentle hands by Satu Ruokonen RN, Dr. Forley's surgical nurse, who performed the SilkPeel in their surgical suite. One of the advantages of this hand held Envy Medical device, is that the pressure is pre-set by the trained provider, for comfort, efficacy and consistent pressure.  (Unfortunately for me, I have literally been wounded by over zealous "passes", which abraded my skin in the hands of other aestheticians.) I had no such worries in Satu's care as she explained every area, including my neck, that she was treating. There was no discomfort, whatsoever.

Impressively again, Dr. Forley met with me post treatment to discuss my experience and results. I could tell from the time spent, that this is a Plastic Surgeon who really listens to his patients concerns and treats the their issues with the most effective means for each individual; nothing cookie cutter here.  One of the advantages of seeing a Plastic Surgeon for your anti-aging needs, in my opinion, is that they have every means at their disposal, from injectibles like Botox Restalyne, Sculptra and Voluma to non-surgical devices like Ulthera, Cool Sculpting and when necessary, a good old  fashioned scalpel.  Dermatologists and Medical Spas simply don't have all of these tools in their anti-aging arsenal to use for your best results and needs as you age.

So what were the results of my SilkPeel?  Silky smooth, glowing, baby skin. Wistfully, I regretted making the appointment on a day when my husband and I would be in a dark concert hall that evening...a perfect Diva Red Carpet moment wasted!

I'll admit that when I here the words Medium-Full Coverage describing a foundation, I immediately think, "not for me!" It conjures up a combination images of bad skin and newscasters, who unfortunately, are left with no pore unviewed, courtesy of HD TV.

What do I need this for?

The buzz on Too Faced Born This Way foundation is phenomenal.

I am a huge fan, and liberally take advantage of Sephora's sampling program. No matter what is written, the only thing that matters is how a product performs for us individually. Having the ability to test a product on freshly washed and prepped skin, not layered over other makeup while playing in store, is a world of difference. I also love trying things out for several days so I can see how it wears and washes off, before pulling the trigger on a purchase.  I was happy to sample Too Faced Born This Way Foundation in "Golden" and as always, hoped for the best.

For starters, I've never seen a foundation that so closely matched my skin tone, which is the big push behind this foundation. Despite the fact that it is a medium to full coverage foundation, it is meant to be virtually undetectable, your skin, but literally perfected:

Born This Way is an oil-free foundation that masterfully diffuses the line between makeup and skin. For coverage so undetectable, you can’t see the makeup or the imperfections—just a natural-looking, luminous, flawless complexion. The revolutionary formula is infused with a potent combination of coconut water to naturally replenish moisture levels; nature’s resilient alpine rose to brighten the skin’s appearance and promote elasticity; and hyaluronic acid for a smoother, more youthful appearance. 

Only the tiniest bit is needed, and it is best applied as suggested by putting a dot in the center of the face and then fanning out with fingertips or a brush. For those who would prefer a hair less coverage, I would recommend combining it with a spritz of a hydrating mist if you have one, or, in a pinch, I'm sure good old H2O would suffice.

So, can I get past my own bias of thinking, who me? "needing" a medium to full coverage foundation.  Well, I guess that depends on how you define "need".

Can I get used to looking radiant, spotless and flawless everyday? Can I appreciate a product that stays put and doesn't fade or change color even during one of the busiest times of my work year? One that lets me layer blush over it seamlessly?

Ya.  I can.  Afterall what's in a word???

Am I the only woman on the planet who likes this foundation???  Possibly...I bought it on a whim because I had a $3 off coupon at CVS.  In addition to all day wear, Better Skin promises, well, better skin, after three weeks of use, specifically lightened  hyper pigmentation, that's freckles and age spots, in English.

I'll bite...I love the fact that makeup finally has some benefits to it besides make us look better.  I also wanted to experiment with trying a really dark shade, that would hopefully mimic from the get go, what I look like after tinted moisturizer and Stila's One Step Bronzer Mousse.

Have you ever resorted to using bathroom hand lotion to tame frizz, particularly around the hairline?  I have!

I did a clever thing this summer.  Rather than wrestle the summers humidity wreaking havoc on my hair, I opted to have a Brazilian Express hair treatment. More mild, than the one that makes women look like an Afghan for 3 days, my Brazilian Express treatment, joyfully, could be washed and blown the very next morning.

Am I a little bitter than my sister Loren, she of the China doll hair gene, has never had to battle unruly beach head?  Maybe just a little...But now, I too, am unfrazzeled 24/7. Added bonus? My hair drys in half the time. My stylist Sonia says I won't need another treatment for another 2 weeks, so all in, it will have lasted 3 months of bliss.

Here's the thing about me the kind of chickadee, who wouldn't dream of going to the grocery store without makeup; the opportunity to zhush things up when truly special occasion crop up is limited.

One of the tools that's left in my arsenal, is false lashes. I've tried a bunch, Ardell, which I think hark back to the 60's and have remained a drugstore fixture like Revlon's Cherries in the Snow, ever since, and more recently, Katy Perry's, line from Ulta.  I was excited to receive a pair of mink lashes to review as well...
The trouble was, no matter how I tried to trim and thin them, they still looked like road kill on me, simply a case of too much of a good thing.

I am also not a fan of a full strip of lashes. I could see wearing them if I was appearing on T.V. (Diane Sawyer is never on air without,) but for mere mortal wear, I find them overwhelming.   My method is to cut one lash in half, and apply it to the outer third of my eye, with the longest lashes extending out to the corner.

For me, it adds a touch of glamour without making me look, God forbid  like a Kardashian.

There has been a tremendous amount of buzz about Lancome's Miracle Cushion Foundation as being a completely new, portable foundation.

Actually, Pur Minerals beat them to the punch, with their Pur Minerals Air Perfection Cushion Compact Foundation.  I wrote about it, with love, back in September.  Available in only 3 shades, I was riding the crest of my summer color and was using the "tan" shade...Too dark for my winter pallor and relegated to the back of a drawer, I honestly forgot about it.

Friends had been raving about the light-medium coverage and glow they were getting with Lancome's Miracle Cushion Foundation, so needless to say, I had to try it for myself, STAT.

I blogged last week about having some really good skin days and teased that I was also testing out an unarmed foundation. Since  I also started using Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer at the exact same time,  I couldn't be sure if my great results were from the primer, the foundation or the 1-2 punch of the two together...I'm pretty sure it's the latter, so be prepared to invest in both.

I can say the exact same thing about both products, "it's a snap to use, the cool, lovely texture blends seamlessly and with ease. In seconds, your skin will appear as close to flawless, as it might ever be. Score 1 for Lancome, Miracle Cushion Foundation, that it is also infused with treatment ingredients to hydrate and brighten.

Truly, it's such a simple concept, that makes so much sense...as long as we are applying something to our face, why shouldn't it also provide benefits?  Amiright???
