The Met Gala 2013: Fashion's Biggest Night Out

Chairwoman Anna Wintour arriving at the Vogue sponsored Met Gala

It's the first Monday in May, so as is tradition, tonight is the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala.  Say what you will about the Academy Awards, this is the most important night in American fashion.

Sponsored by Vogue, Anna Wintour is the the Queen of the Hive.  Her honorary Co-Chairs this year are Lauren Santo Domingo, Rooney Mara, Ricarrdo Tisci and Kate Blanchett.

The evening raises millions of dollars to support the Costume Institute and marks opening of their newest exhibit Punk: Chaos to Couture, curated by the insanely talented Harold Koda and Andrew Bolton.

The challenge, is how to make pretty out of 80's fashion that was raw, sexed up and very black...Deborah Harry was the very best of it.

This year, for the first time, the Red Carpet was also streamed live.  I've been trolling the Getty photos on all my favorite sites and will show you what I think are the best looks so far; those that capture the spirit of the evening nicely and those that are just straight up fugly:

The Fabs:

Anna Wintour, exquisite in Chanel Couture
(with a little arm coverage T.G. Social Media
has been unkind to her lately, with pics to
back it up)
Uma Thurman; a vision in Zac Posen (couldn't
the minion in the background dressed up a bit?!)

Hilary Rhoda

Karolina Kurkova

Anne Hathaway in Vintage Valentino
(trying to make
nice nice after her last
minute Prada switch at the Academy Awards)
P.S. I thought she was Nicole Richie.
Hate the hair.
Miley Cirus in Marc Jacobs with a platinum
porcupine swim cap

Rosie Huntington-Whitely in Gucci
Goddess

Gwen Stefani in Maison Martin Margiela
Rooney Mara, breathtaking in Givenchy Couture
by her good friend and Co-Chair Riccardo Tisci

SJP in Giles
Love the dress, hate the Philip Treacy Fohawk Fascinator
The always divine Nina Dobrov in Monique L'Hullier

The beautiful Emmy Rossum in Donna Karan Atelier

The Fuglies:

Kim Kardashian
Motel 6 called: They want their bedspread back--
They'll leave the light on...
Allison Williams in Joseph Altuzarra
Just keep smiling sweetie, you know its
a train
wreck, but it will be allover in a few hours

Beyonce in Givenchy for Puss in Boots II

Katy Perry doing her best Punk Princess
looking like a Game of Thrones extra

Gwyneth in Valentino. Not punk. Not pretty. I think she is dabbling
in modesty after her recent Iron Man Red Carpet debacle in Antonio Berardi
Below:

Cameron Diaz may win raves from the fashion critics;
I think she looks like Sister Betrille

Kate Upton flopped wearing a flammable
quiana nightie from the 70's with bed head

Desperately Seeking Susan Jessica
Madonna in Givenchy
"Look Mom, no pants!"

Madonna in her best role ever, playing herself in
Susan Seidelman's 1985 punk classic
Desperately Seeking Susan. Much preferred.

And so it goes...

  1. Bahahahaha , you made me laugh with your comments. Well, I can hardly found any great style. I mean I love couture but these are like the worst ever. With all the money you would think they have a great stylists. Ummmmm nope.
