AAFPRS Presents Rising Trends in Facial Plastic Surgery

My friends at Melissa Kelz PR, represent the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. I'm always curious and happy to receive their annual report on facial plastic surgery trends.  I think it's fascinating and the growth trends and demographics change every year.

The top trend that emerged was the youth boom, with 20 and 30 year olds seeking injectables as a means of "prevention". I'm not sure if that is a guise on the part of millenials, or if the confluence of pore less, flawless, photo shopped images they are bombarded with are making them feel pressured to be perfect.

Wowza!  Let's hope what ever they are doing really is preventative, because if they can't cope with natural aging in their 20's, I can't imagine what they will be doing to their faces in their 40's and 50's...

AAFPRS ANNUAL SURVEY Unveils RISING TRENDS IN FACIAL PLASTIC SURGERY Millennials & Injectables Are Shaping The Future Of Aesthetics WASHINGTON, DC, - January 26, 2017 – Today, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), the world’s largest association of facial plastic surgeons, announces the outcomes of its annual survey, which explores the top trends in facial plastic surgery over the past year and shares predictions for what’s to come. This year’s member survey reveals that combination therapies are king. In 2016, 66 percent of facial plastic surgeons reported combined non-surgical procedures in the same patient as the top trend in their practice. The availability of more advanced and less invasive technologies is making age an arbitrary number. Time has become a more important commodity than money when it comes to staying young and looking good. In the era of insta-everything, patients want to get the most out of every visit to the office. MULTITASKING & MAINTAINANCE “It’s an exciting time for facial plastic surgery, with more and more non-invasive therapies becoming available to us,” says Dr. Fred G. Fedok, president of the AAFPRS. “By combining injectables, lasers, ultrasound and radiofrequency, we are able to offer highly individualized therapies to a much wider range of patients. We can also use these non-invasive options to enhance surgical results and speed recovery time for optimal outcomes.” Cosmetic patients want a more youthful appearance without spending too much or experiencing post-procedure downtime. They need to get back to their overscheduled lives quickly without the telltale signs of having had anything done. Whether its fillers plus neurotoxins to smooth wrinkles or energy-based treatments to lift sagging skin, patients today are all about multitasking and maintenance to slow down the hands of time. “Patients want to look good for their age for as long as possible, and we now have the tools to provide visible lasting results with and without surgery,” says Dr. Fedok. THE POWER OF PREJUVENATION In our youth-obsessed culture, it is all about slowing down the clock. The number of patients under 30 seeking cosmetic tweaks continues to grow. Fifty one percent of AAFPRS members agree that more patients now emphasize early maintenance, with increasing numbers of men and women in their 20s and 30s opting for preventative measures to forestall bigger procedures and surgery. This emerging segment uses advanced skincare, practices sun prevention, and starts with facial injectables before they turn the big 3-0. In fact, more than half (56 percent) of facial plastic surgeons saw an increase in 2016 in cosmetic surgery or injectables with patients under age 30. “The focus has shifted from correction to prevention. Even before the first signs of sagging, lines or volume loss, we are seeing patients adamant about stalling the aging process,” Dr. Fedok adds. Nearly all AAFPRS members (99 percent) agree that celebrity influence still plays a big role. Consumers are constantly bombarded with images of ageless stars, and want access to that fountain of youth.

One of my regular beauty reads is Allure.com, (though I'm still a little cranky about their firing their Founder and 20 year Editor, Linda Wells.  I liked Linda and her monthly letter to her readers was one of the few I actually read, though I can't deny Allure needing a reboot.)

Every one of my senses perks up when I see an article about excellently rated drugstore beauty buys. As I was downloading this into my beauty file, knowing that I was getting perilously close to the bottom of my beloved Exuviance Age Reverse Cream and pondering my next purchase, I also thought I should share it with you.  All of the choices were recommended by top dermatologists, who actually refer them to their patients.

I'm leaning toward trying either the Garnier Ultra-Lift Anti-Wrinkle Night Cream or the Avene Yesthereal Anti-Wrinkle Cream, since I am currently using their Cicalfate Cream during the day and I am quite liking it.

I am a big fan of in home peels  They are quick, simple to use and deliver radiant skin, in the comfy confines of your bathroom, at a fraction of the price of a professional peel.

I swallowed hard before spending $72 on Philosophy's Dual Phase Microdelivery Peel, but it's a fantastic product and I have literally used it over a dozen times, so it has amortized to the point of being an absolute bargain.

TotalBeauty did a roundup of their 12 most highly rated peels. Not surprisingly, Philosophy's The Microdelivery Peel was on the list and came in at #5 I couldn't resist scanning through them, hoping there might be something better rated and lower priced than Philosophy's, since I have finally used the last drop and swipe of the dual system.

The least expensive product was $44, not the bargain I hoped for...

I always say my beauty life and real life frequently coincide.  Right before leaving for London, I received a Space NK newsletter about British Skin Guru Sarah Chapman's newly update Facial Lift Roller. Intrigued, I started doing research. Tech gadgets bore me to tears, beauty gadgets garner my full, rapt attention.

Big Sigh. Sold out.  Next shot, I emailed the Sarah Chapman peeps.  Wouldn't they LOVE to send me a Facial Lift Roller to sample?  "Yes" we would love you to Blog.  "No" we don't have any samples available to send...seriously???  Okaaaaaay.

Before I left, I was also in Bloomingdales, on the hunt for my perennially sold out lip liner fave MAC's Soar. Annoyingly, my Holy Grail liner was also discovered by a well known Kardashian makeup artist. He touts it regularly, spurning a worldwide shortage. Grrrrrrr. Maddening for me, and yes sold out on this trip to Bloomies. (I nearly wept at JFK when a MAC outpost had them in stock. 2 for me, one for my divine host Nancy.)

While at Bloomies, I popped into their Space NK boutique. I enjoy perusing this beautifully curated "shop" featuring the best in skincare and makeup, (but no Sarah Chapman at this location.)  I did spy Lipstick Queens's display of Oxymoron Lipstick and Blush, a matte product that is meant to be used on both facial areas. "Romantic"  is a gorgeous pop of pink, but would never have enough pigment to be my choice as a lip shade, but oh the possibility of being a gorgeous, long wearing blush...(I did love and use Makeup Forever's High Definition Blush, but truth be told, there is nothing "forever" about it. It fades.)

I sampled it and ran...and then obsessed, as this pretty pop that I tapped on my cheekbones with my finger pads, did indeed, stay put. The only time it budged was when I removed it 6 hours later when I was taking my makeup off.  Note to self:  Must have...
