Lighten Up! Garnier Skin Renew Dark Spot Corrector to the Rescue

1.7 fl oz. average price $16
I love when my friends can't wait to tell me about a beauty or skin product they adore and rush up excitedly to share it with me.  My co-worker Ginger is tickled with the amount of spot reduction she is already seeing, after just two weeks of using Garnier's Skin Renew Dark Spot Corrector.  She saw significant lightening and "breaking up" of the pigment on a particularly dark spot on her hand and literally can't wait to check out her progress each morning.

I was surprised to hear she was seeing results after just two weeks, since even prescriptions for hydroquinone don't promise results till about the one month mark.  I asked her if I could take a photo of the tops of her hands so I could update you every two weeks with her results. Happily, she agreed!

Here is a shot of her hands now:

Ginger's hands two weeks into using Garnier Dark Spot Corrector

Ginger swears that large dark spot on her left hand was solid and you can see a significant white patch in the center now.

Naturally, I ran to CVS that afternoon to pick up my own tube.  Despite being reasonably careful in the sun in Florida, I did notice two spots on my chest making a reappearance.  Me thinks I might be going mad, but after just two days of using Garnier Skin Renew Dark Spot Corrector, they are nearly gone.

I do like to read user review on line to see what others experiences have been.  It seems that Garnier Dark Spot Remover is either a white Knight in shining armor, who a total disappointment.  Raves and rips came from every age group and skin type, so it was hard to see a common denominator for either side.

If you have or do decide to try it, we would love to know your results.  In the interim, I'll keep slathering away with the hopes that this cheap & cheerful, non-liver threatening drugstore find, is as good as I think it may be.

Here's hoping and stay tuned...

  1. Hi Debbi . . .I've read about this product as well and some suggest to use it over dark spots insect bites leave behind. Being Filipino, some of us have this issue and in my case I am at a 7 on a 0-10 scale, 10 being severe. Bugs love to bite me and after they have healed, the dark blemishes left behind take months to heal and sometimes do not disappear completely. I am ashamed to wear skirts and shorts as well as tanks and halter tops. I don't want to go to the dermatologist just yet without trying OTC products first. I am hoping this will help me, because I am tired of hiding my skin and wearing long pants in the summer heat. I will be more than happy to update you on my results using this product.

  2. I hope it works for you too M.I found my best results were within the first two weeks. Friends have also highly recommended Clinique's Dark Spot Remover. It is about twice the price. If its within your budget, I might try that first.

  3. Hi Debbie,

I have thought about trying this product and Clinique's as well for dark spots on my face, but I am concerned about these products affect the other products that I use. I use Obagi Vitamin C Serum, and a lot of products out there can deactivate the vitamin C. I am afraid that when I mix too many products on my own I can end up doing more harm then good.

Love your Blog by the way,

  4. Hi Diva S.,
Thanks for your kind words about my blog.

I think you need to view tackling spots as a separate mission, it's literally just Spot treatment. Apply with a Q tip if you really want to be exact. Obagi definitely makes a product specifically for age spots. If you are using their Vitamin C products with success, I would stick with this line. All of their products are designed to be compatible.

Let me know and thank you for posting.

  6. Hi Anon,
If nothing is happening by three weeks, I'm not optimistic it will work for you. Individual results do vary. I hit a plateau at 3 weeks and did not see the improvement my friend did.

  10. I think my friend had uncommonly good results with Garnier. I would recommend Murad's Skin Lightening Pigment Gel over this product. I have had success lightening both freckles and age spots with it.
