Musings on N.Y. Fashion Week-Spring 2018

Front row selfie with Jeffrey Ciullo
V.P. of Sales at Pamella Roland

I read something spectacular in the Business of Fashion this week! IMG, the former powerhouse behind the tents at Bryant Park and the runway installments at Lincoln Center, is planning on bringing back an organized venue for Fashion Week at Spring Studios.

Pray God, it is so, because it is complete madness to dash all over town like a ping pong ball to see shows at a half a dozen or more spaces, sprinkled all over the City.

Literally, the thrill is gone.  Fingers crossed, this will be up and running for the Fall shows in February.

My BFF is my Vogue runway app.  If you haven't downloaded it yet, stop reading please, do so and come back.

You are welcome...

Oh how I love to swipe through the collections in nanoseconds.  As Co-Owner's of Mary Jane Denzer in White Plains, my partner Anastasia Cucinella and I are always on the hunt for new talent.

Runway of course, is always exaggerated for effect and for the press.  The truly salable, wearable clothes, live back at the showroom, where the real work gets done.

Still, I don't mind seeing something that is beautiful, wearable and salable on the runway. Here are some of the trends that threaded through many of the collections:

Pretty in Pink-

Pink at Pamella Roland

Ombre Pink at Pamella Roland

 Shades of Blue-
Gorgeous blue ombre tulle at Pamella Roland

 Long blazers, Strong Shoulders, Denim-

White Days and Nights-

Gorgeous LBD'S-

And with a nod to Spring, a touch and a flourish of flowers-

In the meanwhile,  we are very excited  about all our gorgeous goodies from New York and Paris that are currently in store, at Mary Jane Denzer for Fall.

In addition to the most beautiful clothes to wear for your important events, we have added more collections to suit your every day lifestyle needs. Please do, come visit.

As we like to say, "Come Experience the Extraordinary"!

Fondly,
Debra O'Shea

Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals

Amy Adam's NOT in Tom Ford, in Tom Ford's
noir thriller Nocturnal Animals

A funny thing happened on the way to see Manchester by the Sea...My husband and I were astonished to see a line a block long.  This is not a common suburban experience, in fact, I have no memory of ever having seen this outside of NYC.

Unfortunately, it was sold out.  (*Unfortunately, we made a trip back to see it.
This is singly, the most over hyped film of the year. Bleak, meandering and depressing.  I'm not familiar with Casey Affleck's work, but this laconic, dull performance is NOT Oscar worthy.  Do skip this...)

Fortunately, since it was a small theatre, that tends to book smaller films for thinking people; our fallback was the critically acclaimed Loving or Tom Ford's stylish, neo noir thriller Nocturnal Animals.

Given the choice, how could I resist see Ford's new film? Inevitably, no matter what the plot, there would be gorgeous interiors, attractive people and stylish clothing, beautifully worn. (A stunning contrast to the film's opening scenes.)

It is all that, and more, simultaneously, a thriller and a tale of how empty all of those expensive trappings can be, if loveless.

Interestingly, Ford, made the deliberate choice not to feature his own clothes in the film, though the polished, sleek aesthetic of designs by Chanel, Gucci, Dior, Miu Miu, Celine and Marc Jacobs, could easily be mistaken for Ford's own.

Ford deliberately did not want the film to appear as an advertorial for his brand, choosing to keep his creative and intellectual talents as Designer and Director, separate.

Smart.

Of course that doesn't rule out the stylish cast, which includes Amy Adams, , Isla Fisher, Ellie Bamber (clearly Ford loves his red heads; Julianne Moore also starred in his first film A Single Man) and Laura Linney from appearing in Ford's clothes at the Premiers for Nocturnal Animals.

It's a good film, that like what the good ones do, keeps you thinking about it, long after you have left the theatre.  In addition to Manchester by the Sea and Loving to look forward to,  there is also Jackie, starring the magnificent Natalie Portman as Jackie Kennedy, they day after her husband's assassination.

After a dearth of good films, it's a pleasure to have something to look forward to this holiday season. Today's treat?  The Greenwich Ballet Academy's production of the Nutcracker at the White Plains City Center.  I'm glad we purchased tickets for it ahead of time, since it is completely sold out.

Note to self...buy those movie tix ahead of time too.  Seems I'm not the only one starved not just for eye candy and popcorn, but brain candy too...

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Tom Ford Counter...

I attended a Polyvore  evening event on a gorgeous rooftop in Rockefeller Center a few weeks back. With such close proximity to Saks Fifth Avenue (yes, that one), what were the chances that I would skip a cruise thru their illustrious cosmetics department???

Exactly none.

I had the feeling this was going to be my long awaited Tom Ford  counter encounter...The one where I would finally breakdown and spend $50 on a lipstick, though it has always resonated poorly with my usual spendthrift being; seriously...is their wax embedded with precious metals? What am I missing? Better yet, why am I lusting???

Debbi OShea and Jamal Walker of Burberry
I had the good fortune of never quite making it to the TF counter.  Instead, I met acclaimed N.Y. makeup artist Jamal Walker, who resides over the Burberry Cosmetics Counter, a line that is not available in Greenwich, where I usually shop for my cosmetics.

How fortuitous.

Jamal, who is well known for his professional work for photo shoots and private client events, was perfectly versed on all things Burberry. (You can see his work on his Facebook Page  and call him directly at 201-875-0887.)

I told Jamal I was on a mission to find the perfect lipstick and liner; something softer than what I usually wear, but with enough definition that I wouldn't look washed out. I then let him choose what he thought would look best. I also asked him what is the one product I can't leave the counter without.

For Lisa

For Lisa

Oscar de la Renta strapless dress / Dsquared2 leather shoes / Tom Ford black purse / Kimberly McDonald diamond earrings / Kevyn Aucoin makeup brush / Lollia fragrance /

I created this set for my amazing friend and mentor on Polyvore Lisa Purkey.  I reached out to Lisa when I first joined Polyvore and she took me under her wing and taught me the ropes.

Her sets are beloved and in a little over one year, she has already amassed nearly 30,000 followers!   She also asked me to co-moderate her contest group, aptly named Poly Divas, where we take turns running contests among the other obsessed creators.

We met in NYC in June at the Polyvore meet up that was sponsored for us...Suffice to say, it was love at first sight!  I look forward to spending time with her again in either NY or Atlanta this spring.

I know there are many who think social media sites divide our time and attention, but I'm here to tell you, they can also spark true friendships among those who share similar passions.

Wishing Lisa, her family, my Poly Pals and my dear readers, friends and family and Happy, healthy, joyous 2014.

Fall Prints: London Style

Fall Prints: London Style

Michael Kors turtle neck crop top / Pink skirt / BCBGeneration shoes / Stella Dot bracelet / Michael Kors beach sunglasses / Tom Ford lipstick

I was reading in the NY Times the other day, how Designers are now influenced by the streams Instagram photos they look at daily. No doubt, the incredible things women are photographed wearing on the streets of fashionable cities must pop some fashion kernels.

The woman in the photo, Harper's Bazaar's Joanna Hillman was photographed at London Fashion Week. Look at the way the way she paired this amazing, black and white spattered midi skirt, with a simple black turtleneck and wrapped ankle strap sandals.
Throw in the red lips and your have sartorial splendor in 4 easy pieces.

In a word???

Brill.

Divine!

Divine!

Divine! by divadebbi featuring a lip stick

dVb Victoria Beckham white cotton blouse / Knee length skirt, $455 / Sophia Webster patent shoes / Swatch polish jewelry, $60 / Alexander McQueen belt / Tom Ford cat eye glasses / Tom Ford lip stick

Does this woman not look divine?  Half the fun of fashion week is seeing the artfully clad fashionista's who manage to combine vintage couture with thrift store finds to dazzling effect.

The other half, is my preference, women who stick to crisp, linear, nearly basic ensembles and accessorize them with great flourish. They stand head and shoulders above the pack, and make it all look effortless.

Divine...

The Fashion Circus

The Fashion Circus

I was utterly charmed by Nicole Miller's Spring 2014 show. With a nod to Versailles, and the mazes of extraordinary gardens, Nicole had visions of peasants storming the Palace, imagining shards of smashed china and trampled blooms everywhere; thus sprinkling embroidery and embellishment on many of the pieces she sent down the runway.

Despite the description of her inspiration,  paired with clean silhouettes, it all looked pretty and wearable...Probably too tame for Marie Antoinette, but perfect for a Diva.

Polyvore asked us to chose some of our favorite looks from the Spring 2014 collections for one of their contests.  Other than the runway, none of these images will be available to "clip" for fashion sets until they are available at retail, so this is my homage to Nicole's homage.

Fashion, is indeed, a circus...

The Hedge Fund Wife

The Hedge Fund Wife

The Hedge Fund Wife by divadebbi

For a certain type of lucky NY woman, say the wife of a Hedge Fund mover and shaker and mother of four, Labor Day marks the end of a blissful summer. in the Hampton's.

While their husbands are in NY during the week making money and their kids are in camp, they spend long days shopping, playing tennis, exercising and lunching with their GF's. It's rife with stress I'm sure. Back to reality...or their version of it anyway.

In my next life, I hope to report on all of it to you first hand...if I'm very lucky!
