The 6 Biggest Trends from the Spring 2017 Runways

NYFW has officially ended.  Anna and the rest of the flock will be jetting across the pond to London, as their Fashion Week kicks off just about the minute they all touch down.

Kudos to the New York Daily News for nicely summing up what appears to be the key trends of the Spring 2017 Season.  Though it always seems an odd coincidence, the designers are influenced by the color forecasts that come out long before they put pen to pad and the same fabric mills that they all frequent.


In a nutshell, there was nothing that we haven't seen before, but I promise, you will see many, many times ahead in the months to come.  The trends they sited are below, and I followed up with my assessment:

For me, the only two that looks that feel like retro retreads are the fringe from Ralph Lauren and the Lilly Pulitzeresque offering from Tory Burch.

I adore animal prints. I see them as timeless. It feels fresh to see them trending in a grey pallette, instead of  traditional camels and blacks.

Yellow is a very tricky color at retail, because with most peoples coloring, it is hideously unflattering. This is a trend I would use more as a pop; a patent clutch or shoe.

Green has not had a moment for quite some time...I'm liking it and pleased that I was ahead of the curve when I bought Victoria Beckham in just this hue.

Floral's for spring are not exactly new, but I do love them. The only caveat with any print is that they can overpower; always make sure you see your first...not the frock.

Fringe?  I'm over it.

I was thrilled to see the continuing of Cold Shoulder dressing. I like it, so much in fact that I purchased a black sequin cold shoulder Donna Karan gown last spring (I'm wearing it my blog picture.) I think it's sexy and modern and I'm glad it carried over.

Besides being my  playground for creating the fashion sets that I often post on my blog, Polyvore is also one of the worlds largest retail fashion websites.

Fashion Week Spring 2014 is just a few weeks away, but already I'm starting to plan what I will be wearing.  Everything should appear effortless, but like countless other Fashionistas, it's  carefully choreographed dance.

Polyvore is running a contest to be selected to represent them at Fashion Week.  FW is not for sissies, so I'm hoping my being seasoned at attending and reporting on it , will work to my advantage.

Fingers crossed please...

My entry above highlights 'Pastels', a strong Fall Trend from many of the European houses.  Pale pinks, peaches and blues were often shown as outerwear.  

I like them best paired back to black, navy and grey, as a pop of color.  Keeping the lines and the accessories crisp and linear will read chic instead of sweet.

I hate sweet...

Ever since I was a little girl I have had a weakness for soft pink and lavender and certain iris  purples.  I think it harks back to a large Disney Cinderella book I had.  In my mind's eye, I can still picture the magic of the scene where Cinderella is transformed for the Ball, the pumpkin has turned into a coach and the mice into footmen.  All were awash in the colors above.

To this day, the memory and these lovely hues still enchant me. We are never too old for a good Fairytale, don't you think???

Just as I could never sell something to a client that I don't love in my heart and soul, I never use clothing in my sets that I don't love or at least appreciate.

This set is the real me.  I have always thought that purple and brown look divine together. I am mad for this Etro Paisley pencil skirt juxtaposed with this drapey Helmut Lang top.  I think the Alexis Bittar dragonfly broach is heaven, the Verdura inspired KJL cuff is a great, next best thing, the Tory Burch boots are perfect and the J. Mendel bag is other worldly.
