L'Oreal's Colour Riche Balm (Photo courtesy of Musings of a Muse) |
I have always been a fan of "lip balms", which at their best, should have the pigment of a lipstick with the texture of Chapstick. I combined Laura Mercier's Healthy and Baby Lips for years, in hopes of creating just the right hue of plummy nude...it was always just a bit off from the color of my dreams, but the texture was soothing and I never felt like I was "wearing" lipstick.
L'Oreal has traditionally been one of my favorite mass market makeup lines. As soon as I saw their new Colour Riche Balm, I purchased it without hesitation. Infused with SPF 15 and the promise of 6 hours of wear, I had nothing to lose and as always, hoped for the best.
I think the mass lines have done a really good job in recent years of recreating the feel of more expensive brands at a fraction of the price. My only decision was whether to select Tender Mauve or Plush Plum. I mused for about three seconds before opting for the lighter, Tender Mauve. That might have been an unlucky pick...
I decided to refrain from my usual practice of tearing off the plastic packaging with my teeth, applying it in my rear view mirror and simultaneously backing out of my space, until I got home to give Colour Riche Balm a fair test on clean lips.
I was truly disappointed with the results. Tender Mauve looked positively ghoulish. The tint of this balm made me look embalmed. The texture was comfortable, but I don't see how this bear hint of color could possibly yield 6 hours of wear, (thank God).
Since it appeared so many shades off from the color I chose, I'm not inclined to give Plush Plum a shot either. Sadly for me, the balm was a bomb.
Tomorrow evening I will be attending a new brand launch from the maker's of Burt's Bees. Burts Bee's also makes a tinted lip balm, but none of the colors ever had my name on them... I have the feeling my luck will change. As always, I'm hoping for the best.
Stay tuned...

Oh no...was hoping for better results. Saw this at the drugstore and wondered...
ReplyDeleteHi Designchic,
ReplyDeleteI was too! It is ofcourse subjective, but the colors are very off from how they appear in the tube. I always purchase my mass market cosmetics at CVS and safe my receipts!!!
If you try it, let me know if you have better luck!
Wow, I have Tender Mauve and similar coloring and skin tone as you. I love it. I love the shine and it keeps my lips protected and moisturized for a few hours.
ReplyDeletePerhaps you can check out Baby Lips from Maybelline? I have all of them, and they are great, and inexpensive.
I have a lot of the Burt's Bees lip balms. I can tell you that the tinted balm colors are just awful. Not sure what they are thinking. None of them are natural looking, which is ironic.
Everyone is different of course, but I thought I would leave a positive review. Thanks for the great blog post!
Thanks for posting AnnaB!
ReplyDeleteI will definitely check out the Baby Lips, I noticed them too.
I texted one of my BFs from CVS as I was shopping. We couldnt be more opposite in our coloring, yet we marvel at how the same shade of lipstick works for us. Between the two of us, we tried to swoop up every discontinued tube of Maybelline's Petal Pink on the planet.
Glad you love yours! Maybe I will cave and try the Plush Plum on my return trip.
I am still quite in love with Revlon's Lip Butters. I included them in my Best of 2011- Face blog. Just snagged a new shade, "Sugar Plum" at Target. This may just be the best lipstick/balm ever created under $10!
