Accent on Shimmering
It’s always fascinating to see how the worlds of fashion and sports collide. Is it too big a leap to think that the glittering gold of the upcoming London Games was subliminally in the imaginations of designers this past spring? Is it simply a coincidence that the likes of Michael Kors, Miuccia Prada, Karl Lagerfeld and Stella McCartney all caught gold fever at the same moment?
The most important night of fashion each year is not the Academy Awards, despite the fact that the winners actually do get to bring home the gold (or at least, the gold-plated britannium). No, the real night to shine is The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala, chaired by Anna Wintour. This year, for the first time, it was streamed live, to my delight. Believe it or not, there are those of us who value a gleaming bias-cut gown ascending a staircase just as much as we do a reverse 2 1/2 somersault in the pike position.
One of the most celebrated images of that night was Karolina Kurkova in a golden mermaid-style couture gown by Rachel Zoe, topped with a glamorous turban. She looked like a real-live Oscar. It was a breathtaking moment, worthy of its own gold medal in a paired event.
With gold on the red carpet and the runway, it was inevitable for it to trend through the world of accessories this season. Shoes shine, from Lanvin and Gucci gold ballerina flats, to platforms, pumps and sandals by Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo and Manolo Blahnik.
Gold clutches are having a huge moment and are particularly beloved by the Brits Sarah Burton, (for Alexander McQueen), Stella McCartney and Anya Hindmarch. They look particularly striking paired with dramatic cuffs by Philipe Audibert and YSL as well as 24k hammered bracelets by goldsmith Gurhan and skinny white jeans.
Not surprisingly, glimmers of gold have also found their way into the beauty collections of Bobbi Brown, Laura Mercier, Giorgio Armani, Chanel and Deborah Lippman.
As the world prepares to cheer on its best and brightest at the Summer Games, you’ll have plenty to choose from if you attend any Olympic-themed parties. If not, we can do our part simply by raising a glass of Champagne to the athletes’ achievements. Truly, they are all winners and they do make us proud.
So go, USA. And as the Visa commercial says, Go, World.

Everything is as good as gold...
(Photos courtesy of Style.com, Polyvore and Quintessence Blog)
I must say that I thought the couture gown that Rachel Zoe created for Karolina Kurkova to wear to the Met Gala was a work of art. Flawless execution and fit and of course I loved the additional drama the turban added.
Divine...no???

Updating your L.B.D. This Season
The powers that be at the website Womens Voices for Change, Dr. Patricia Allen and Style Editor Stacey Bewkes have been enjoying my Polyvore creations. As such, they nicely asked me to create some vignettes for their Fashion Friday's column. Here is a reprint:
About a month ago, we discovered that Fashion Friday friend Debbi O’Shea had started creating fabulous fashion vignettes on her site DivaDebbi. We thought it would be fun to invite her to create some for us, showing us ways to update for this spring season the little black dress we all have hanging in our closets. We will let Debbi explain her discovery. —Ed.
I recently stumbled upon Polyvore, a website that allows users to create and share their fashion whims with like-minded fashionistas. Not surprisingly, I’m addicted to creating outfits; it reminds me of my favorite pastime Colorforms from years past.
For the three occasions outlined, below, I chose a classic Moschino Cheap & Chic cotton crepe “Pencil” dress ($495 at Stylebop.com). This dress’s elegant style, weight, and price point was a perfect foil for different style options
Black-Tie Wedding: Unless the bride specifically requests a certain style, I would be much happier adding this spectacular lace Valentino coat to my wardrobe than another gown to hang idly in my closet. I loved the jolt the ruby satin shoes add. Makeup, too, should be thought of as an accessory. A red lip would be a must, “paired” with the earrings.

DivaDebbi's Quickie Hit List: #1 Gloss/ Moderne Hair Masque
I do make it a habit to deep condition my hair a few times a month. The traditional recommendation of shampooing, towel drying, applying product and standing around buck naked and freezing, has always made me cranky...what about you???
I cheat the system and (keep my warm), by microwaving a dollop of deep conditioner for about 15 seconds, applying it to dry hair, going about my biz and then shampooing it out after 15 minutes or so.
Here is the first reason I LOVE Coco de Soleil's Gloss/Moderne High Gloss Masque Haute Brilliance:They have eliminated the towel dry and shivering step and replaced it with a delicious smelling cocoa butter masque, that is intended to be used in the shower!!!

Travelling in the "Parallel Universe"
One of the websites I subscribed to is Rachel Zoe's The Zoe Report. I receive it daily and love reading her cheeky take on all the things that inspire her. Two features that I especially love is that 1) she is operating in "real time", meaning if it's summer, she's raving about a bo chic sundress you can wear tomorrow and 2) she makes suggestions that are available by link to a similar but more affordable style in the "parallel universe".
Nice!!!
I often ebb and flow back and forth between high end luxury cosmetics and my CVS hauls. I also receive newly launched products from the P.R. companies that represent them. Often they will send me more than one shade, so I bring the non-match with me to work, to see if I can match up who it is best suited for.
