Well, the big night is behind us...and as always, a few trends prevailed--the Red Carpet was awash in blush pink, blinding white, statement necklaces and quite a bit of skin. Of the major designers, Atelier Versace had a big night, dressing Jennifer Aniston, Scarlett Johanssen, and Zoe Saldana, beautifully.
Perhaps Red Carpet fatigue has set in for me...I found myself alternatively disappointed and flummoxed. And while some elements of certain looks were outstanding; Jessica Chastain's beautiful hair and makeup for example, were not enough to carry her awkward, unflattering Givenchy gown. If I were grading, like I usually do, Jessica would be receiving a C+.
Flawless was few and far between; I winnowed it down to three; Margot Robbie in Yves St. Laurent, with a fantastic sleek bob and bold lip and Zoe Saldana, (incredibly, just 3 mos. post delivering her twins), in Atelier Versace, and the lovely Anna Kendrick in Thakoon.
Everything worked exquisitely...Gowns, hair, makeup, accessories. A+ Goddess Land:

A bit off, but still fabulous? Cate the Great Blanchett, Jennifer Aniston (often maligned as boring and safe, I think Jen is true to herself and rarely flubs), Scarlett Johanssen, (minus the seaweed Swarovski choker), and Emma Stone in Eli Saab, (who almost made puce work), Sienna Miller in Peter Copping for Oscar de la Renta, (with heavy handed contouring) and a much improved Rosamund Pike, stunning in Givenchy.

Jennifer Aniston in Atelier Versace Loved the dress, wish the hair was less beachy |
The always divine Miss Stone in Elie Saab I was thrilled to see the back of this dress was tastefully open, keeping this from looking a hair MOB. Loathe the color. |
Rosamund Pike Radiant in red Givenchy |
Disappointing:
Marion Cotillard in a Dior beehive, Nicole Kidman, Felicity Jones, Patricia Arquette, Lupita Nyong'o, Laura Dern and Julianne Moore in custom Chanel, who has been otherwise spectacular this awards season. She broke my heart.
Marion Cottilard in Dior |
Nicole Kidman in Louis Vuitton Just Say No |
Felicity Jones in Alexander McQueen The bodice has a squid vibe to me and I hate the Disney princess satin skirt. Dove did the lovely Felicity no favors either. |
Patricia Arquette wearing Rosetta Getty who is her BFF Loyalty should have its limits, no? |
Laura Dern in a Game of Thrones costume by Alberta Ferretti, with awful accessories and odd bangs |
Julianne Moore in Chanel |
What can I say? Nothing is working here, not the color, not the cut and certainly not the um... design or its hip placement. (I was of course thrilled that Julianne won. I saw Still Alice and her work was extraordinary. I just wish she was wearing a prettier frock on the night of her big win).
Too much skin. I'm so over it. J. Lo in a been there done that Elie Saab, Naomi Watts and Chrissy Teigen. More is more Girls. Cover up!
Naomi Watts in Armani Prive. Not loving a bandeau at the Academy Awards. The Grammy's??? Why not. |
Chrissie Teigen in Zuhair Murad. If we must, can one please choose between the legs and the tata's? Both just looks trashy. |
And lastly, what can I say? For Gaga, it was tame, Playtex Living Gloves and all,
but all was redeemed, (including I suspect her flailing pop career), when she magnificently honored Julie Andrews with her rendition of songs from the Sound of Music. Who knew??? Now we all do. Lady's got pipes...

Agree? Disagree? Who did you love? Who did I miss? Good thing I have couple of months to regroup before the Emmy's. By then hopefully my Red Carpet fatigue will have faded...

We share almost all the same favorites! And what was with that red belt on Nicole? You pinpointed why I was uncomfortable with Julianne's choice -- it just didn't do her fabulousness justice. In the end, Gaga's performance ruled the night!

Agreed about Nicole Kimberly! The belt looked random and the overall effect cheap.
