The Beauty Graveyard

Has this ever happened to you???  You find your Holy Grail beauty product, albeit a foundation, mascara, liner, blush, lipstick or gloss and then one day,  poof...it's GONE!!!  Who makes these reckless choices???  Do write-in campaigns ever revive them like cancelled sitcoms?  Do the "new and improved" ever really match the original???  Not likely. In a pinch, there is always Ebay...

We had to laugh... On Saturday night, at exactly the same post Hor d'oeuvre moment, my friend Ilissa and I both discreetly pulled out the same Maybelline Petal Attraction Pink lipstick from our evening bags.  In my pre-blog days, I used to e-blast my gal pals with my beauty finds.  This small, bullet shaped lipstick had it all going on:  it plumped  .  It stayed.  It was a drugstore bargain and was the one and only lipstick I have ever found to be "universally flattering", a beauty concept that I am always dubious of.  What are the chances that a brown eyed brunette and a blue eyed blond could share the same lipstick shade???  Pretty slim.  Ilissa's lipstick was worn so low, it was beneath the rim of the applicator. "It's been discontinued!!!  What are we going to do"?

I hit the same wall over the Holidays and took a chance that I might be able to locate some on Ebay.  I went to the Health & Beauty category and typed in "Maybelline Petal Attraction Pink".  To my astonishment, up popped several resources including one who could send me 3!  Done...another marvelous miracle, courtesy of the Internet!!!  Later that week, my friend Naki asked me to do her lips exactly how I did mine.  I am constantly in search of a perfect nude/pink lip liner.  You would think it would be easy to find and a staple of every collection.  Wrong!!!  I am not alone in this quest and at the recommendation of someone on the website The Timeless Beauty, I found the perfect shade, MAC's "Soar".  I lined her lips with Soar and then applied Petal Attraction Pink.  She looked in the mirror and loved her nude, but better natural looking pout. This on an olive skinned brunette blond, with hazel eyes.  Yup.  Universal.  How could I not give up one from my stash and buy her a MAC Soar liner for Christmas?

I checked my goodie closet and sure enough, I found the last of my Petal Attraction Pink stash.  How could I not give it up for Ilissa , who was nutty enough to run out and buy it at my suggestion in the first place???  I texted her yesterday..."I have a present for you.  Your mailbox or mine"?  "Yours please"!!!

I just checked Ebay and the last two Maybelline Volume XL lipsticks live in Japan.  Time to move on. So Dear readers, I am open to your sympathetic look-a-like suggestions.  Consider it a mitsvah...for all who have lost loved ones to the beauty graveyard.  Petal Attraction Pink,  R.I.P.

DD

  2. I was SHOCKED to discover that my favorite eyelash curler, one that has consistently been named a favorite by every pro make up artist and beauty magazine is no longer sold in this country. (FYI Its the She Uemara one)I bought one from Ebay, and it appears to be a cheap imitation. So much for that... though I HAVE found some other great discontinued cosmetics there in the past.

  3. *lurker alert*!! Hi DD - I've always enjoyed reading your blog and look forward to trying out the products you recommend. I used to love the Revlon moisturestay lip colors(in the gold tube) and really, truly hated letting them go after they were discontinued, so I feel your pain...
Also wanted to add that the allcosmeticswholesale website does seem to have the petal attraction Maybelline lippie - thought you might like to grab a few more for your stash? Looking forward to reading more your beauty finds :)

  4. Illisa my Darling, you are most welcome!

Suzanne! So nice to hear from you! I recently saw the She Uemara at Nordstroms. It is the gold standard! Please check with them.

    Undercover Gypsy,

  5. I undertand that makeup companies cannot keep everything in stock.. but I am still mourning the loss of Adrian Arpel's department store line (*heavy sigh* I still mourn the loss of Baby Skin Bisque foundation) and Ultima II makeup (Bordeaux blush anyone?) And even more so for Armani, by Giorgio Armany perfume (a lone tear falls down my cheek)

I do understand the concept of 'new and improved' but it doesn't mean I have to like it and sometimes fight it kicking and screaming.

  6. JoElla!!!!
OMG Ultima II Bordeaux blush!!! I too was a huge fan!!! It is frustrating! I have had luck with finding esoteric, but not discontinued, perfume brands from some of the larger perfume sites online...have you ever tried to locate your beloved Giorgio online?
