I can't say I don't have good hair..I do. Thick with a slight wave, stylist's getting a little glassy eyed when I sit in the chair. I've seen the disconnect kick in quickly--it's almost like I ceased to exist. All they want to do is get their mitts in there and cut or if its a blow-out tug.

As a result, I rarely love my hair when I leave the chair. It's either too big or too flat. When I blow my hair, I'm generally happier with the volume, but miss the shine and crisp finish that you do get with professional styling.

I was on a CVS run yesterday, looking for a new John Frieda Flyaway Tamer, a DivaDebbi Best of 2011 pick, that I can't live without. Heartbreak in aisle 2: All sold out. . Never one to leave a drugstore empty handed, I spotted Nexxus Volume Effexx Round Boar Jumbo Brush and pounced.

I am maniacally fastidious about removing every stitch of makeup before bed. Regardless of the hour or festivities that proceeded it, I cannot bear the thought of going to sleep with clogged pores, soldered lashes or without performing my nightly skin care rituals.

I tend to be a bit of a night owl, so when I crawled under the covers for warmth while watching some late night television, it never occurred to me I might fall asleep...but it happened. I woke up around 2:30 horror struck by the fact that I was still in full maquillage.

If I got up and did my usual routine, I might as well put up a pot of coffee and start my day. Then I remembered I had received but never tried Lumene's Sensitve Touch Gentle Cleansing Wipes. Why had I not bothered to open them, despite my positive track record with other Lumene products ??? My original cranky rant about the lack of common sense, manners and respect for fellow paying patrons, was in response to the woman who sat with a screaming baby on her lap while she had her hair colored, (and I had a migraine:http://divadebbi.blogspot.com/2011/12/rules-of-beauty-civility-salon.html).

This time, the infraction occurred at Cozy Nails, my weekly haven in Greenwich. Who knew I would have the making of a series...or perhaps a book.

I've missed the boat for years about this uber tidy salon. Cozy employees great technicians, who never rush you and a plethora of "massager's", who graciously provide nearly continuous kneading throughout your entire manicure.

I tip "Veronica" generously because I love this "free" service. I was always the Girl face planted in the massage chair, like a slab of concrete, for "10 minutes", that always felt like two. This costs me less and I get sooo much more. It's my pleasure to thank Veronica for her services, (though I have seen some less than gracious tips proffered and was dismayed to recently hear a falsely cheery, "catch you next time")!!!

Wednesday, when I went for my manicure, I excused myself to go to the ladies room first. What I was really doing was scoping out the salon to make sure the the LOUD vibrato, headset mounted cell phone yapper, who destroyed my zen last week, was NOT on site...With the coast clear, I chose a color and took my seat.

Foundation Brushes: Do We Need Them?

Until this week, I probably would have said, "nah, my fingertips are doing the job just fine, thank you".

I have purchased and tossed several foundation brushes over the years. I was never impressed with the amount of product they soaked up, the uneven finish they produced or the fact that the synthetic bristles felt like doll's hair.

Back in the Fall. Shiseido hosted a gorgeous event for Beauty Bloggers, in the roof top Penthouse of a TriBeca hotel. We were introduced to Shiseido's Bio Performance Skincare, their newest cream shadows, and the illustrious Renaissance man, Dick Page, Shiseido's Worldwide Artistic Director, albeit, "virtually".

When I test out a new skincare line, I generally like to give it at least a 3 or 4 week trial. In that time, I can usually determine if there is any improvement in tone, firmness and fading of imperfections. However, if the texture and smell are not pleasing, I will shut it down long before then.

Guerlain's Meteorites Powder

I am a huge fan of Guelain's Meteortites Powders. There is something about these sweet little pastel balls in their elegant new container that utterly charms me. It reminds me of something Jeannie might have had nestled on her dressing table...a place I would have happily called home for a good chunk of of my childhood...

I finally gave in and purchased it about a year and a half ago at Sephora. I love swirling a large, clean, brush, over the melange of colors and sweeping it over my face and decollete as the last bit of maquillage for the day--- tre elegant. Guerlain calls it their "Luminizer" and I think it lives up to it's name beautifully.

Can you afford to use something everyday that makes you look and feel a little more beautiful? Of course! And so can I.

Frankly, I can't afford not to and neither can you...Je l'adore!

OMG! So much GG post mortem ground to cover!. I do like this night...it's fun to see the worlds of film and television relaxed, air kissing, and swilling cocktails together. Ricky Gervais righted his misguided performance last year and was his usual witty self, even though he looked like he was moonlighting from his gig in a Mariachi band.

Fashion and Beauty Trends quickly became apparent as we saw oodles of trains, strapless gowns, rich color, pale nudes, ponytails, touseled waves, low hanging-side up dos, red lips and God willing, no more headbands anytime soon...

The A-Team were so blindingly beautiful, that the fairy dust they sprinkled almost created the illusion of an awards show without missteps...rest assured, there were plenty. But first let's focus on the all stars:

Is SmartLash a Smart Buy?

Time will tell...I purchased this product at the urging of my sister Loren. She insists it looks like she has "mink muffs" on her eyelids, after just one faithful month of using IQ Derma's SmartLash. Do ya think I needed much prodding after that comment?

I have three Lash Enhancers, all in a semi-state of use. My lashes look "fine". I highly doubt any product will ever give me the full on lush lash love that I experienced after my full Latisse trial...truly, they were magnificent.

The down side was twofold: 1) I felt like I had ground glass in my corneas everyday and 2) in my heart, I knew I couldn't continue to use an off-label glaucoma drug for the rest of my life to maintain them. Oh well...

Review: L'Oreal's New Colour Riche Balm; A Buy or a Bomb?

I have always been a fan of "lip balms", which at their best, should have the pigment of a lipstick with the texture of Chapstick. I combined Laura Mercier's Healthy and Baby Lips for years, in hopes of creating just the right hue of plummy nude...it was always just a bit off from the color of my dreams, but the texture was soothing and I never felt like I was "wearing" lipstick.

L'Oreal has traditionally been one of my favorite mass market makeup lines. As soon as I saw their new Colour Riche Balm, I purchased it without hesitation. Infused with SPF 15 and the promise of 6 hours of wear, I had nothing to lose and as always, hoped for the best.

I think the mass lines have done a really good job in recent years of recreating the feel of more expensive brands at a fraction of the price. My only decision was whether to select Tender Mauve or Plush Plum. I mused for about three seconds before opting for the lighter, Tender Mauve. That might have been an unlucky pick...

Maybelline's New SuperStay 14 Hour Lipstick

I am always on the prowl for a long lasting lipstick that doesn't make me feel like I just applied sandpaper. Most of the long wearing lipsticks, including Maybelline's SuperStay 24 Hour Lipstick, require revival with the clear balm attached to it. Don't get any funny ideas about applying your own lip gloss over these products...they must be chemically created to molt the instant you do.

I was on a CVS/Pharmacy run the other day---Quelle horreur!!! They are either out of, or no longer carrying L'Oreal's Elnett, just as I have finally discovered I can't live without it. Despite my disappointment, I naturally found a half a dozen other items that needed replenishment anyway. (I'm in there so often, I'm surprised they don't offer to hang my coat and provide a glass of Perrier , whilst I shop).

On my way out, I spied a display I somehow missed, Maybelline's new SuperStay 14 Hr. Lipstick ($8.99). Naturally, I stopped dead in my tracks. This was a normal bullet shaped lipstick sans dreaded clear balm applicator. The color choices were limited and I suspected that my selection, "Pout on Pink" was going to be a hair more coral than I prefer. Of course I got back on line and purchased it anyway.

As soon as I got home, I used my Bliss Fabulips Cleanser to remove any trace of lipstick so I could get a true read on the color. I almost wished I hadn't! It certainly packs a potent pop of pigment (say that 10x fast)! It did however glide on and I let it set for a minute or two. Just as I suspected, Pout on Pink is more corally than my tastes, so I looked for a pink hued lip gloss to tone it down and hoped that it was not also chemically predisposed to reject lip gloss.

No worries, Bobbi Brown's Pink Sequin High Shimmer Lip Gloss did the trick nicely:

Now for the 14 hour part. I think it's all a bit relative to eating and drinking. Hunkering down at the movies with large bag of popcorn? You may need a touch up when you emerge from the theatre...Bellying up to the bar??? Same.

I think it is best served as a good start to the day...at no point will your lips be completely naked, no matter what you do, until you take it off. That's good enough for me, until they come out with a temporary lip tattoo. I am however, looking forward to a wider selection of shades.

I have the feeling this is going to be a love/hate thing, even though I'm firmly in the like camp right now.

New Year, New Look

New Year, new look, (not for me, for the website...but I'm open)! I'm so excited for the year ahead! So many new opportunities have come knocking...3 1/2 years of blogging is beginning to bear fruit. It's been great fun stretching my wings and brain cells. I've met so many great people along the way too. When I can share them in more detail, I certainly will.

I encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and try something new...I'm not a technical person, but have managed to grow DivaDebbi simply by connecting with my readers. It still astounds me that it is read all over the world...go figure.

I've also taken on a new role at Richards. In addition to my duties as their Personal Shopper, I am now the Brand Ambassador for Giorgio Armani Black Label.

It was exciting to see the enthusiasm our clients showed, placing orders for Pre-Fall. Mr. Armani's new direction, included gorgeous pops of iris, pumpkin and fuscia, beautiful knit skirt suits, elegant sheath and cocktail dresses and blouses and knitwear that would make any slim black pant look finished and new. Lucky me! I can't wait to wear some of my new goodies.

My point is this---I know I spend oodles of time writing about beauty and in particular anti-aging products and techniques, but I don't see the downside to wanting to look your best. The prettiest way to age is with a youthful spirit.

How can this be accomplished??? By embracing all that you have learned., especially the tough lessons and consciously working on nurturing what is joyful in your life; Think positive thoughts. I have a new addiction...I have spoken of it before. My adoration for the daily fashion blog Red Carpet Fashion Awards. Edited by its creator Catherine Kallon aka "Fashion Critic", aka FC, this Time Magazine top 25 website of 2011, brings us a prodigious amount of photos and commentary on what's being worn on the Red Carpet worldwide. I'm awed by FC's output, and ability to seemingly be everywhere at once.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of this website is that it fosters a community of fashion obsessed commenter's. FC engages us to express our own opinions and it's always interesting to see the diversity in our takes. Visiting this site each day had definitely sharpened my own eye and appreciation for great styling and all the details, tailoring, hair, makeup and accessories, that go into making a particular outfit a, "BDOTW" (Best Dressed of the Week) contender.

It also makes me really appreciate women who consistently make an effort to wow us with grace and beauty. Here are some of my favorite "Ladies". Their style knows no age, race or ethnicity...only elegance:

Let's Hear it for the Girls...

Of all the beautifully packaged Holiday Gifts Sets this season, I thought this Benefit promotion "I'm Glam Therefore I Am", was nearly perfectly executed and wonderfully priced. Adorably packaged, it includes almost everything you need for day or night. If they had included a black liner pencil, they would have completely knocked it out of the park, but for $36, one can't do too much grumbling.

The eyeshadow colors are subtle, apply like silk and it even comes with instructions on how to create a perfect look for daytime or evening. It also suggested a fabulous tip. If you want to achieve perfect placement of your crease shadow, tip your head back while applying. It works like a charm! I also adore they youthful flush the, "Glamming Face Powder" provides and it lasts all day.

When the opportunity presented itself to "steal" this and snag the additional bonus of my new Holy Grail mascara--Benefit's"They're Real", I leaped at it...but up until then, I feigned only vague interest. Was I committing petty larceny??? Nope, just having some fun at my annual Book Club Holiday Dinner, at what I now know is called a, "Yankee Swap", (thanks to the power of Google). Ah....the Holiday's at Richards!!! In my role as their Personal Shopper, I especially love the Holidays. I have known many of my clients since our children were toddlers. The years have fostered some lovely friendships, and in turn nice relationships with their spouses, many of whom rely on me for year round gift counsel. Whether or not we've done a little pre-scouting before my email with picture attachment is sent, I'll never tell.

I promised you an update on my experience with L'Oreal's Voluminous False Fiber Lashes Mascara.
Though I swore I had found my Holy Grail with Benefits They're Real Mascara, I couldn't resist trying L'Oreal's version of YSL's Faux Cils, particularly tempting when it came in a penny shy of $10 bucks.

I mentioned reading the reviews at Makeup Alley and read a mixed bag from raves to rages with most settling in somewhere around the middle. I tried it on clean lashes, with an open mind. A Perfect Pairing: Irene Neuwirth and Yigal Azrouel

A few weeks ago at Richards in Greenwich Ct, we decided to doubly delight our clients by hosting a Spring 2012 trunk show that paired two uber talents, Irene Neuwirth, the L.A. based jewelry designer and Yigal Azrouel, the handsome Israeli born designer of French Moroccan descent, and let the sparks fly. Stylists; take note. It was a perfect storm.

Quickly, it became evident that Irene's intensely colored, powerful gems, with their bold, modern appeal (frequently featured on the Red Carpet by superstars like Iman, Reese Witherspoon, Sheryl Crow, Sharon Stone, Zoe Saldana, Marisa Tomei and Lea Michele), would be the perfect accompaniment to Yigal's ultra feminine, clean modern silhouettes.

Guests munched on brioches stuffed with lobster and sipped champagne, while Yigal and Irene collaborated on accessorizing the models that strolled through the store, meeting and greeting guests and helping with selections.

Clearly, everyone had a fabulous time and Irene and Yigal enjoyed it so much, we will be repeating the magic on the West Coast at our Wilkes Bashford locations in the future.

In addition to her amazing photographs of Irene's work, she spent time with Irene and writes a fabulous piece about her inspiration, technique and booming success. Holiday Hair:101

While I would like to believe that mastery is always possible, my limitations in the school of spatial perception is perhaps a hair higher than the pre-school level. Case in point? Remember those illusion drawings? Did you see a Young Lady or an Old Crone? I could always only see the Young Lady...no matter how it was explained, I never saw the Crone, (e tu)?

Recently, at a private party in N.Y.C., I took a trip to the Ladies room. The doors were festooned with a W and an M...seemingly. I'm not sure if it was better or worse that this was a party amongst friends, because I ended up you know where, and it wasn't their hats that were in their hands-- I'm still cringing at the memory of it, (even worse, much like the Lady and the Crone, I still couldn't see how that M wasn't a W).

Where is all of this leading? To a reasonably good solution, for those of you, who, like me cannot master how to use a curling iron, if their high school equivalency diploma depended on it.

I get a pit in my stomach every time I see big, soft, barrel waves, not just on the Red Carpet like Lea's gorgeous glossy tresses, but effortlessly created by anyone who can twirl, in the right direction. Ditto those who can achieve adorable little flips with their flat irons.

Michelle Obama looked incredibly wonderful as she stepped out with the President to enjoy the Kennedy Center Honors on Sunday night. Mrs. Obama's elegant, strapless sapphire Vera Wang tulle and chiffon dress was a knock out, gently accentuating her curves and highlighting her assets. I think she looks especially good in jewel tones, this being no exception.

My preference with strapless dresses is almost always an important earring and a bare neckline, (and I will never object to a gorgeous cuff on the arm or a President for that matter). Mrs. Obama's radiant skin is the only other adornment this dress needed. Her hair and makeup are pitch perfect as well.

Recently, I was in N.Y. on a perfectly gorgeous, fall day. I found myself with an hour in between appointments, so I put on my thinking cap to figure out where I could enjoy an hour of reading and fresh air...

The Truth About...

As the Holiday season officially kicks off , the month ahead is a busy time socially for many. It's gotten to the point where people make appointments for injectibles, with the same calculating eye they use to assess their roots and eyebrows before important events---just another element in their maintenance routine.

Lately, my clients in their early forties have confided that they are feeling ready to take the plunge...they are noticing deeper crows feet and furrows between the brows, their lids are looking a wee droopier and their foreheads more lined. They are also noticing that while no one is 'fessing up, some of their friends are looking decidedly "fresh".

One of them confided her kids asked her, "why are you always so mad Mommy"?. She's not a "mad Mommy", but the deep line between her brows does admittedly look like a permanent scowl....what to do???

It's that time of year again, for giving, receiving and treating yourself. Though it seems like yesterday, literally, that we were clinking glasses toasting the end of summer at a Labor Day party, come turkey day, we have officially turned the corner into the "Holiday Season". All I did was blink.

You Glow Girl

Regular readers know I am all about the glow. In it's pursuit, there is regular exfoliation, occasional microdermabrasion, glycolic acid, Retin-A and Hyaluronic acid. Though is sounds counter intuitive, it all leads to amped up cellular turnover and increased collagen.

I recently purchased Laura Mercier's Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 in Golden Radiance ($42). I had first received a generous sample at Neiman's. It took a little practice to get the hang of how to maximize its potential...a natural glow vs. a phosphorescent gleam...fortunately, practice does make perfect.

Evelyn H. Lauder 1936-2011

My heart was heavy yesterday, when I opened the N.Y. Times and read about Evelyn H. Lauder's passing. Evelyn H. Lauder, a refugee of Nazi-occupied Europe who married into the Estee Lauder cosmetics dynasty, died on Saturday at her home in Manhattan, at age 75.

I knew that she had been ill with cancer in the last few years, but did not know her recurrence was due to ovarian cancer, instead of breast cancer. As a genetic breast cancer survivor (knock wood, spit spit), and fundraiser, I have long looked up to her as an inspiring example of a life well lived after diagnosis, both personally and professionally. She struck me as an unstoppable optimist.

"The cause was nongenetic ovarian cancer, said Alexandra Trower, a spokeswoman for the Estée Lauder Companies". In 2007 she received a diagnosis of ovarian cancer, which developed independently of her breast cancer, Ms. Trower said.

This is the first time I have ever heard the use of the term "nongenetic" used to emphasize that she was not a BrCa 1 or 2 mutation carrier, which puts you at significantly higher risk than the general population, of being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. A common recommendation for BrCa 1 or 2 carriers, is removal of the ovaries and fallopian tubes after childbearing (particularly if a breast cancer diagnosis is involved).

"Mrs. Lauder learned she had breast cancer in 1989 and soon became a strong voice on behalf of women’s health, though she was always reluctant to discuss her own condition. “My situation doesn’t really matter,” she told a reporter in 1995".

"She was a creator of the Pink Ribbon campaign, a worldwide symbol of breast health, and in 1993 she founded the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, which has raised more than $350 million".

"Another major accomplishment by Mrs. Lauder was the establishment of the Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. This Center, completed in 1992, incorporated diagnostic and treatment services into one center together, something which had not been done previously and has now been emulated in multiple other centers worldwide".

It is my belief that there are other breast and ovarian genetic mutations out there, that remain for now, undiscovered. Evelyn Lauder knew the key to preventing and curing breast and ovarian cancer lies in the hands of the brilliant doctors the Breast Cancer Research Foundation supports.

She is survived by her husband Leonard, two sons and five grandchildren, and with hope, future generations of women.

R.I.P. Mrs. Lauder and thank you.

DivaDebbi's Makeup Diet

I finally did my bi-annual closet switch and purge last Sunday. I dread doing it for weeks, finally dig my heels in and finally breath a sigh of relief when it's all over. I can promise you one thing, from years of experience; you will not pine for, or even remember anything you choose to donate.

As a reward for ~~having a Sephora addiction~~ being a V.I.B., I have been looking forward to receiving my 4 Day 20% off pass at Sephora for weeks. I know it seems inconceivable that I could need anything, but after I finished editing my clothing closets last week, I moved on to my makeup closet, and continued the purge. The toss tally???

4 foundations
2 tinted moisturizers
3 blushes
2 brushes
8 lipsticks
2 mascaras
3 eyeliner pencils
2 eyeliners
2 concealers
3 lip glosses
1 highlighter
1 primer
5 eyeshadows

OUCH!!! Clothing at least can be donated. For sanitary reasons, the only place for this heap, was a Hefty. While I do receive some of this swag free for reviews, enough of it came out of my pocket to qualify me for V.I.B. status at Sephora.

What I would like to be going forward, is more thoughtful about my purchases, making good choices and sticking with them. How do I intend to this? I will start treating my makeup purchases the same way I do perfume...sampling them and test driving them, before committing to full size products. I will also read a lot more reviews on blogs, Makeup Alley, TotalBeauty and Sephora before buying.

Did they wear well? Crease? Fade? Flake, Go orange? Get dry/oily? Smear? And remove easily?

I know I can do better. Will I still be entitled to my V.I.B. discount next November? Maybe not...but the "beauty hand print" I leave on this world, will be a little lighter--there was an awful lot of wasted product and packaging in that Hefty.

John Frieda's Touch-Up Flyaway Tamer

Lately, I've noticed a new beauty woe that I never had to deal with in the past, short, broken, flyaway strands in the front of my hair. According to Harry Josh, John Frieda's International Creative Consultant, they are the result of, "over-styling, over-coloring and generally overdoing it". Guilty as charged.

I have read expert tips to suggest controlling these little buggers in the past; using hair spray on a toothbrush or hand cream to keep them at bay...uh no.

My friend Laurie, a book club buddy (with thick, shiny hair that has never had a bad hair day), mentioned John Frieda's Touch-Up Flyaway Tamer to me months ago as a "must have". It is intelligently packaged in a convenient wand that easily fits in your makeup or handbag and "instantly" tames flyaway's.

I immediately set out to find it at retail...to no avail. I don't want to mislead you either...my new best friend may be something you have to have sent from the likes of Drugstore.com, Ulta or CVS...hate that--but it's worth it.

Daphne Guiness. Icon. Goddess.

I am going to cut my self some slack... Nothing I could write could possibly due justice, or properly describe the extraordinary assemblege of clothing that comprise the Daphne Guiness Exhibit at the Fashion Institute of Technology in N.Y. (through January 7th). I still can't certain ensembles out of my mind.

Daphne Guiness was named to the International Best Dressed Hall of Fame in 1994. I don't know how she escaped my radar until my two visits to the Alexander McQueen exhibit this summer at the Met...that is a heady honor that is not bestowed lightly.

Daphne, now 43, is a Guiness, an heir to the Guiness Brewery by birth and the Granddaughter of Nancy Mitford famed British author, the eldest of the 6 notorious "Mitford Sisters". At 19 she married Spyros Niarchos, (son of billionaire shipping magnate Stavros Niarchos) and bore 3 children. They divorced in 1999. She is also stunningly beautiful.

New York New York and Sisterly Love

I love New York. Never more than in the Spring and Fall, on clear days and crisp nights. It literally reinvigorates my soul.

On Wednesday night, my sister Loren and I had a sleepover. We started our night at Bloomingdale's, at an event to benefit the Council of Fashion Designers of America. The N.Y. Times collaborated with the CFDA, to launch their 50 Photographs Collection. 5 top fashion designers, Diane Von Furstenberg, Parabal Garung, Vera Wang, Zac Posen and Michelle Smith, went through the Times archives dating back to the 1800's and each selected 10 of their favorite images. (I can't imagine how daunting it was to narrow it down to 10 pic picks).

It was a fantastic display of memorable photographs, covering iconic shots of fashion, nature, dance and architecture. Each designer provided commentary about what inspired them to make their selections, (though sadly, in the din of the crowd, we could hear not Bo peep). Diane Von Furstenberg's selections were my favorites and were the most synergistic, reflecting her love of modern dance and classic N.Y. architecture:

After a delicious dinner at Serafina's (where we not suprisingly ordered twin dinner and drink orders)!, we strolled home past Hermes windows, until we didn't...We both stopped in our tracks to first observe these oddly futurist windows:

An Hermes coffee cup holder??? We knew there had to be more to this story. Whimsy is not the word that pops into my mind when I think of the House of Hermes...A Google or two later, I found this entry on The Fabulous Report. Not surprisingly, there was much thought and purpose to the display:

We hit the second floor, to the newly expanded Shoe Salon, which should come equipped with oxygen masks...I was literally hyperventilating. The depth and breadth of what is available is simply staggering and it is all beautifully edited.

Mission accomplished, Loren found a perfect pair of nude suede Jimmy Choo's. Banded in an elegant shimmering trim, it's the perfect accessory for the evening outfit she was looking to complete, yet subtle enough to wear beautifully by day.

She left me with two kisses, on the main floor, while I ogled the jewelry and planned the rest of my day...

Sisters! Tops, always...Fortunately, I also have an army of great Gal Pals, including one of my BFF's Barb, who caught up with me later to see the Daphne Guiness exhibit at F.I.T.

Though it was unusually cool and rainy yesterday, it was pure sunshine inside the tent at the 16th annual Breast Cancer Alliance benefit luncheon and fashion show at the Hyatt Regency in Greenwich.

This was the sixth year that Mitchells/Richards sponsored the fashion show and nearly 800 women were treated to a whirlwind of exciting fashion from Valentino, Brunello Cucinelli, Michael Kors, Akris, J. Mendel, Giorgio Armani, Jason Wu, Yigal Azrouel, Lela Rose and exquisite coats from the Oscar de la Renta Couture Collection.

In a word: Swoonworthy ~~even if I did just make it up.~~

All of this is the culmination of a year of hard work of dozens of volunteers, chaired this year by Patricia Burns and Amanda Davis, with the great support of BCA President Debbie Black and Andrew Mitchell-Namdar of Mitchells/Richards. This was my fourth year on the committee and I am proud to be associated with this incredible organization

This year's Guest Speaker was Cokie Roberts, whose list of accomplishments is so long it could comprise another blog. As is tradition, she is also a breast cancer survivor. The finale of the fashion show always includes survivors and often, the people who helped them achieve it. My supporter, was my friend Michele Penque. We know well in our hearts, that our dear friend Lorraine Millar, a 20 year survivor who lost her battle in 2009, was looking down on that runway with joy. I was also extremely proud of my colleagues Patricia Cinquemani and Iwona Kelly who walked the runway together. Both received breast cancer diagnosis' last year, fought hard and won. Their smiles say it all...

This is such a fun and glamorous day, but what is really impressive, is the mission of the BCA and the breadth of their accomplishments. Fundraising, has allowed the BCA and their dedicated Board of Directors to disperse over $13.5 million dollars to some of the most brilliant researchers in the country. In an average year, 75% of their grant funds go to research and 25% to early detection programs in the communities they serve. The distinguished cancer specialists on their Medical Advisory Board, together with outside experts, help them to make quality grant decisions.

Over the years, the Alliance has funded a variety of cutting edge research grants and one-year post-graduate breast surgery fellowships at 25 of the nation's leading research institutions. They have also funded community outreach programs and education initiatives in nine communities in Connecticut and New York.

In a word: WOW!

What can you do to stay on top of your breast health? Know your family history (paternal history counts equally). Get annual mammograms beginning at age 40 (earlier if you are at high risk), with a manual exam by a Radiologist. If you have dense breasts, insist on a bilateral ultrasounds. Exercise often. Drink moderately. Be in touch with your breasts in the shower. If you need a biopsy, seek medical help from a Breast Specialist.

If you do ever hear the dreaded words, "You have breast cancer", I promise, you will not go it alone. Family, friends, survivors and organizations like the BCA will help see you through...

Two of the products that I am so happy with now, are kinder, gentler versions of two well known bestsellers; Benetint a deep rouge cheek stain left me looking like I was harboring a high fever and High Beam highlighter that made me fluorescent instead of incandescent. On Saturday evening, I had the great pleasure of being a guest at a most extraordinary wedding. Over the years, I have had the privilege of attending some spectacular benefits, events, and celebrations. Of one thing I can be sure, nothing can or will match the beauty of the union of Taylor Sites and Thomas Grothe, at the legendary Frick Museum, (one of the pre-eminent small art museums in the Country). In a word? Spectac. (Pics to follow).

So, how does a Girl who wouldn't scoot out for a quart of milk without full maquillage notch up for an important event??? Slim pickings...a pretty dress, a decent blow out and false lashes. I have already 'fessed up that D.I.Y. lashes are not within my pervue. I thought I recalled that the Benefit Brow Bar at Bloomingdales in White Plains, where I have my brows groomed, also applies lashes and extensions. I also have a sweet spot for any retail establishment that does not require me to enter a mall. Bloomies it was.

Carrie Fisher Has a Brand New Head

I was rendered speechless when I saw this picture of Carrie Fisher. My eyes were trying to convince my brain that this was in fact Carrie Fisher. True, we haven't seen her 50 lbs. lighter in quite some time (she is the new Jenny Craig spokesperson), and we have never seen her with a chocolate brown bob, but neither of those two facts deflect from the fact that Carrie Fisher has a brand new head!

How does this happen???

To me, this is the epitome of scarily, overdone work. This is not a 57 year old woman getting refreshed, (this, I have no issue with) This is a 57 year old woman getting a major overhaul, that has left her with that vaguely generic, over blown, Hollywood look. It's not just the facelift (and chin implant,, I suspect), it's the nose work, cheek implants, lip enhancement, Botox and Restylane...in short the full ~~Montag~~ Monty, and all I can think of is why???

Who are my Poster Girls for "Good Work"? Here are some examples; some are great beauties, some simply attractive women like Carrie. A few are a few years younger than Carrie, several a few years older.

To me, this is how it should be done:

There is no need to identify anyone, because everyone still looks like themselves! Carrie???...not so much. Ultimately, we need only please ourselves. So I truly hope she is happy with her results.

One of my favorite Carrie Fisher films, is the still hilarious When Harry Met Sally with Meg Ryan (don't get me started)... Billy Crystal and the wonderful Bruno Kirby, as desperately lonely singles looking for love in N.Y.C.

In my minds eye, I will always remember her best as "Marie", fresh faced and funny.

And I will leave it at that...

Closet Closure: The Bi-Annual Switch

URRRGHHH. I can't procrastinate much longer...can you? I loathe this chore...mainly because I could be better at it. From time to time, clients from Richards will ask me to come help them edit their closets. In less busy months, it's my pleasure. There is one caveat and I always give fair warning, "I'll do it...but I'm ruthless.

To date, no one has turned me down. Whether they actually end up donating all of the, "that has got to go" pile, I will never kow. If there anything like me, they will slip a few pieces back in their closets, giving them one final reprieve.

Why is it so hard to part with things? I have a few theories:

1) It cost a fortune. You felt a little guilty when you bought it, now your giving it the boot. Pit meet stomach.
2) You wore it to your rehearsal dinner (a couple of thousand Fridays ago).
3) When you lose the 6 lbs. you put on over the summer, that skirt, ____.____ is going to fit like a glove.
4) It's Chanel, Armani, fill in the blank, it will be back in style---eventually.

Pretty much, it should all go.

How do you know when you really must part ways?

1) If it's faded, tired, pilling, too short or has Amazonian shoulder pads.
2) If you haven't worn it once in three years, you never will again.
3) If you felt old, fat or dowdy in it the last time you wore it.
4) It's an orphan and you never did find the perfect blouse, sweater or jacket after years of searching.

Honestly, I have never missed or regretted donating anything.

What should you keep?

1) Your evening wear. Long, cocktail dresses, evening blouses, beaded tops, tunics, silk, satin and velvet pants, elegantly cut wool dinner suits. I may always crave something new, but I have things that are as beautiful now as the day I bought them. This is a category where things can actually be timeless.
2) Your little black dresses. Ditto.
3) Suede and leather skirts, pants and dresses.
4) Coats. As long as they are in perfect condition.
5) Belts. It's either a skinny belt year or a wide belt year. Either way, next year your good.
6) Clutches and evening bags. If they were classic and elegant then, they probably still are now.
7) Shoes that are chic, comfortable and in good condition. If they are stylish but tired, find an excellent shoe repair store to breathe new life into them.

So, this is it. I can't put it off any longer. Sunday I will roll up my sleeves and sort and schlep. Have any tips to add??? I would love to hear them!

C'mon Girls...we can do this. Let's be ruthless...

I do make it a habit to deep condition my hair a few times a month. The traditional recommendation of shampooing, towel drying, applying product and standing around buck naked and freezing, has always made me cranky...what about you???

There are so many intelligent, entertaining writers Blogging these days...I wish I had more time to discover them. I usually find new favorites based on the "Link List's" of Blogs and websites I read regularly.

I don't recall how I stumbled upon Red Carpet Fashion Awards but since the day I have, I've been addicted to checking the seemingly endless stream of celebs on the Red Carpet and reading "Fashion Critic's" thoughtful musings on their looks---head to toe. In addition, F.C. kept her readers buzzed in on the shows she took in last week at Fashion Week.

Why exactly is Red Carpet Fashion Awards soooo compelling??? Because in addition to her own astute, generally snark free observations, she invites all of us to chime in and offer are opinions too...and chime we do. It is a savvy, informed bunch of fashionista's who respectfully agree and disagree about silhouettes, fabrics, designers, necklines, lengths, lipstick, shoes...always shoes. Chado Ralph Rucci- Spring 2012

Fashion insiders tend to be a fairly tough crowd and Fashion Week is a whirlwind. As such, it takes an awful lot to impress a room full of editors, celebs, retailers, clients and bloggers and standing ovations are rare indeed.

The collection that Ralph Rucci showed on Thursday and Lincoln Center for Chado Ralph Rucci was so extraordinarily beautiful that I was left speechless and teary eyed.

The room was filled with many of his "Girls", Jamie Gregory, Deeda Blair, Nancy Racquet, Joan Kaner (the former Neiman Marcus Fashion Director who was one of Ralph Rucci's great mentors), and the magnificent model Carmen Dell'Orifice (above), whose picture I snapped on the runway. Would you possible believe she turned 80 this past June???

Just after leaving the L.A.M.B. presentation at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center, I spotted Alex McCord of Real Housewives of ~~Brooklyn~~ New York fame dashing in...Naturally, Hub Simon Van Kempen was within eyeshot. I asked to take her picture and she sweetly obliged.

I could see why Alex would want to see the L.A.M.B. Collection by Gwen Stefani...she is never afraid to take risks and she enjoys color. Gwen definitely is her own best muse, and I could picture her in every look, as well as Blake Lively, Leighton Meister, Sarah Jessica Parker and Chloe Sevigny, a leggy bunch, with plenty of confidence to match...

If a runway show could be considered a party, this would be it.
DVF and her husband Barry Diller have a long reach, so you can always expect to see captains of industry, sitting side by side with Celebs and the biggest names in Fashion. It's a hoot and I am not nearly jaded enough to ever be bored...next time I'm packing opera glasses...

Lela Rose Spring 2012

Today was such an emotional day. As New Yorker's, there was a sense of stoicism about our manner and pride in our beautiful City. And hope...always hope.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center is a wonder. It's sleek spacious and seamlessly organized...the perfect venue for the shows. I had the great pleasure of spending the day as the guest of Peter and Linda Levy. In between shows, it is always a treat to be able to relax in the elegantly appointed IMG suite. We are seated above with our friend Courtney Dunavent. (Notice the divine hydrangeas, though the world now knows how Madonna would feel about them)!

I can't think of a more fitting way for Lela Rose to start her show, then in darkness, with John Lennon's Imagine, ringing in ouf ears. When the house lights came up and the first model came up, there was no melancholy, even though the inspiration in her press notes sited, "the neon graveyard". Lela may have wanted to channel something that "was", but it all looked new and fresh.

I loved the palette, which included, "faded lemon, periwinkle and neon tangerine". The fabrics included fantastic open woven Guipure "light bulb" lace, fringed organza,and Jacquards.

The shoes, adorable brightly colored sandals and wedges were designed by Lela Rose in her second collaboration for Payless!!! Yippee!!! They will be available in February 2012 online and in stores and I am predicting a stampede.

Ted Gibson created the hairstyles, which was slicked behind the ears but cascaded softly and a bit undone down the back. The gorgeous natural makeup was created by Tina Turnbow with bareMinerals makeup by Bare Escentuals.

Sweetly, Lela treated all of her guests to a goodie bag that included a primer, mascara and lip gloss from Bare Escentuals, a gift certificate to Beauty.com, and a Commando floral thong. Definitely the nicest swag bag of the week!!!

Let's Hear it for New York

Can you quite believe, it's been 10 years since our world changed irrevocably, when Al Qaeda terrorized our country and murdered over 3000 U.S. citizens? Just as news of Pearl Harbor, The Cuban Missle Crisis and the Kennedy assassination, haunted previous generations, the morning of September 11th 2001 and the fall of the World Trade Center Twin Towers is forever seared into a new generations consciousness.

Is there anyone amongst us, who can forget where they were exactly on that morning?

Sunday's commemoration ceremony honors those who died, even the unborn children of the women who were pregnant, just as it should. It was no surprise to hear that chatter of another terrorist attack on N.Y. or Washington had been intercepted and that security is extraordinarily heightened. I think it is going to be a beautiful day of rememberance. Those who perished here (and in D.C. and Pennsylvania), deserve it.

Tomorrow is also day 4 of Fashion Week for Spring 2012.

THE Beauty Event: Neiman Marcus Fall 2011

It's amazing how quickly we crave a deep Bordeaux nail, as soon as the calendar hits September, isn't it? When it comes to wardrobing for the Fall, everything counts. You can't possibly think about wearing the rich shades of autumn without fine tuning your makeup and abandoning your summer shades. I also always crave a new fragrance and always hope, that something new will smell as good on my wrist in 2 hours as it did when I first spritzed it at the counter and I think I have found a winner!!! I have test driven Jimmy Choo for two days now and it is wearing spectacularly! I strongly recommend you take a good whiff...Bottega Veneta was a very close second).

Every year Neiman Marcus does an amazing job with their Beauty Event (September 8th-18th in store, through the 19th online) and this year does not disappoint. I was invited to preview some of the gorgeous gifts with purchase at my local Neiman Marcus at the Westchester Mall in White Plains, N.Y. I have not had much luck with cleansing wipes in the past. They just don't seem to get that clean thing done. Seriously, what is the point if it requires intense follow-up?

How did we all function before cell phones? The ability to email, text and send pictures in a nano can be both a blessing and curse, but I must confess--I love being this plugged in.

One of the things I use it for most, is to send pictures of things I know my clients need or would adore. After 17 years of wardrobing many of them, my instincts are honed like an ax.. I sent a picture of these Rocco P. boots to my friend and client Abby. She bought a similar pair from Duccio Del Ducco last year and lived in them.

Something about this smokey grey boot with cocoa undertones just looked new and neutral to me... so I snapped this photo and attached it to a mobile text and said, "You MUST come visit these"!!!

Pushing 50? Who looks Older Lindsay or Dina Lohan?

OMG!!! Every now and then I remember to check in on one of my guilty pleasures, the website Awful Plastic Surgery. It's a who's who of wtf, no other way to put it. They don't update all that often and sometimes they feature starlets that may or may not be Jersey Shore regulars, I have zero way of knowing.

But this is a travesty! (And naturally, I must share it with you). Check out these photo's of Lindsay Lohan:

I literally gasped when I saw this photo. A once beautiful young woman (20 at left), looking harsh, mottled and old at 25!!!

But it gets worse!!!

Take heed!!! A true cautionary tale to be shared with all teenagers and young women...this is what drugs, alcohol, too much sun, bleach, botox and restalyne, will do to a person. Frightening!!!

Lastly, a picture of Lindsay and her mother Dina (48). I have the feeling that Lindsay, with her blow fish cheeks, thinks she's looking like an ingenue...frankly I think Dina looks fresher:

There has been a bit of turmoil over on the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills set recently, with the untimely and sad suicide of reality star Taylor Armstrong's husband Russell Armstrong. Rumor's are swirling about editing out many of Taylor's scenes, which focused heavily on her failing marriage to Russell...

Friday was Coco Chanel's Birthday. It matters little how old she would have been. In my mind's eye, she lived eternally, as she is photographed at left.

Misses and Hits- Two out of Three Ain't Bad

I tried two Maybelline products this week. One was a miss and the other a hit. I am a sucker for any makeup technique that helps create a "cats eye". If you have ever had individual false eyelashes applied to the outer corners of your lashes, you know how dramatic the difference is. Look how divine Linda Evangelista looks in this photo channeling Sophia Loren or Gina Lollabrigida.

I tried Maybelline's The Falsies when it was launched last year. I was reasonably happy with the color, consistency and brush. For a drugstore offering, it could go to the head of the class.

I'm Melting...Melting!

I don't think it's a coincidence that 6 people have asked me if I have lost weight in the last few days...the scale is also looking good, thank you. I'm not much of a foodie, primarily because I have little interest in cooking, even though I come from a long line of great ones and do appreciate eating beautifully prepared food.

The only thing I can attribute this to, is the Body Melt treatment I experienced at the Equinox Spa in Greenwich...
